Concrete barriers and barricades, also commonly called Jersey barriers, were created in Hoboken, New Jersey under direction by the New Jersey State Highway Department to divide traffic lanes for automobiles. Barriers are typically 32 inches tall and are made of cast concrete that is steel-reinforced. These road barricades were designed by the Stevens Institute specifically to minimize the damage of vehicle impact in the case of contact. The most common size barriers are 30 feet long and are modular which can attach to multiple lengths for a variety of uses.
